Vitor Belfort Wants Another Shot At Anderson Silva

UFC 126 was always destined to go down as one of the hottest fight cards ever. Demetrious Johnson and ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone warmed up the crowd in the prelims and Jon Jones made an appearance half way through. But it was the main event that produced one of the most viewed knockouts in MMA history.

Vitor Belfort was returning from a two year hiatus. A five fight win streak prior to the break earned him a title shot against dominant middleweight Champion Anderson Silva in the feature bout. However, things went downhill for ‘The Phenom’ from the minute the cage door closed.

Highlight Reel Knockout

Belfort entered the Octagon in incredible shape that night but unfortunately for him, ‘The Spider’ landed a highlight reel front kick precisely on his chin in the very first round. Vitor lay unconscious in front of a sold out Las Vegas crowd and his dreams of another UFC gold were over.

Speaking to MMA Junkie, Belfort has called for a cross promotional rematch with his former opponent. Earlier in the conversation, ‘The Phenom’ alluded to rematches with Rich Franklin, Wanderlei Siva and Tito Ortiz. However, it was Silva who captured his attention the most.

“I agree 100 percent. I will add one more, I’ll add Anderson Silva if that would be possible.”

Cross-Promotional Controversy

UFC president Dana White is notoriously against cross promotional fights. With the two veterans tied into contracts with separate promotions, it is unlikely that the fight will be taking place any time soon. Belfort though, believes the fans are missing out.

“I think as you start understanding that whatever we did for the sport, we gotta put the politics behind and hoping that the promoters can be open to do this kind of cross fighting and just give to the fans. They deserve it.

“It’s all about the fans. As a promoter you’re looking for something that guys that pave their way, they deserve to do fights that are going to increase not just the viewership but also the value for the organisation but also for the sport.”

Vitor Belfort is set to fight Alain Ngalini when ONE Championship resumes live events.
