UFC: Khabib Wants To Fight Tony Ferguson And Then GSP

If all goes to plan, and Tony Ferguson doesn’t trip over any cables and Khabib Nurmagomedov doesn’t eat too many tiramisus, we can look forward to the two finally meeting inside the Octagon in early 2020.

Khabib and Tony have been scheduled to meet four times in the past, but each time, some kind of disaster has struck. A matchup between the two has never been as highly anticipated as it is right now. For as stacked as the UFC lightweight division is right now, no one is more deserving of the next title shot, than Ferguson.

Speaking to FightWorldTurkey (as transcribed by BJPenn.com), Khabib’s manager Rizvan Magomedov, said that Ferguson wasn’t his man’s first choice. Stating that the UFC lightweight champion wanted to fight Georges St-Pierre next.

However, after GSP remaining retired from the sport, Ferguson was next on their wish list. That said, Team Khabib are still hoping to fight the former UFC welterweight and middleweight champion after Tony.

“Our opponent is definitely Tony Ferguson,” Magomedov said. “There’s no other name that deserves it. We wanted the GSP fight, but GSP didn’t get along with the UFC. For this reason, our only and most valuable option is Ferguson. However, it would still be wrong to say one hundred percent in this fight without signing. If the UFC and GSP can negotiate, we want to meet GSP after the Ferguson fight.”

As usual when talking to Khabib, the topic of Conor McGregor came up. Echoing Khabib’s recent comments, Magomedov stated that the Irishman needs to earn another title shot.

“The Conor rematch is not interesting at the moment. Khabib and his team have already listed the conditions of the McGregor fight. He must fight other names and win. He must show again that he is a worthy opponent and deserve the belt competition. If he can do it, Khabib will give him the rematch he wants. Only with trash talk, there’s a zero percent chance of winning this fight. Clear and clear.”

Do you think we’ll ever see Khabib vs GSP?
