UFC: Jorge Masvidal Names His Hardest Hitting Opponent

Following a stint on the reality show ‘Exatlón Estados Unidos’, Jorge Masvidal experienced a career resurgence, earning three huge stoppage victories in 2019 over Darren Till, Ben Askren, and Nate Diaz — the last saw him earn the BMF belt at UFC 244. Now, ‘Gamebred’ is enjoying the highest level of success in his seventeen year-long career.

The Cuban-American has never shied away from top competition, facing big names like Demian Maia, ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone, and Yves Edwards before breaking into the UFC title contention. After many hardcore battles, it is hard to pinpoint which has been Masvidal’s steepest challenge to date.

‘Gamebred’ recently discussed what it felt to face hard-hitting English veteran Paul Daley while answering fan questions on his YouTube channel (as transcribed by TheMacLife).

“He never caught me clean in the fight but I felt his raw power, and I was like, ‘Man this guy’s got good pop’, was Paul Daley,” Masvidal said. “Paul Daley had good pop, and I was also a little lighter in my career this time, but I remember he hit me in the arms a couple of times, and I saw his left hook coming and I could feel his thud.”

Masvidal also discussed the experience of stepping into the cage with another Brit, Darren Till, who he knocked out last year at UFC London.

The former street fighter praised Till’s power and versatility, stating that even his jab felt like being hit by an average fighter’s cross. The bout against the ‘Gorilla’ was certainly a 2019 highlight, with a first-round knockdown for the Englishman and then a spectacular knockout finish for Masvidal in the second.

“Till has the most power of anybody that I’ve faced so far,” Masvidal said. “I remember his lead hand — he’s very well-balanced, it wasn’t just his straight left that’s powerful — his lead hand, when he hit me with a jab, it felt like a regular person’s right hand. Just like a regular right hand, it was like a thudding jab.

“It’s between the British fighters I guess – Till and Daley – but I’m gonna lean towards Till. Till definitely’s got a little bit more pop.”

Masvidal is currently in dispute with Dana White and the UFC over fighter pay, after negotiations broke down ahead of his planned title fight with the welterweight champion, Kamaru Usman.
