UFC: Colby Covington Talks Contracts, UFC Belts & ‘Scumbag’ Jon Jones
Straight talking welterweight contender Colby Covington has just two fights remaining on his current UFC contract. The Florida native recently left American Top Team and has since been linked to a fight with Tyron Woodley, following the former champion’s loss to Gilbert Burns at UFC Vegas.
‘I’m Not Scared Like Judas Masvidal’
Despite previous issues with Dana White and the UFC matchmaking team, Covington told Submission Radio (as transcribed by BJPenn.com) that he is still keen to sign a new deal with the promotion.
“I want to be a UFC fighter. I love being a UFC fighter. Everybody knows this is the pinnacle of the sport, this is the mecca, the UFC. And being in the UFC, I can prove truly I’m the greatest welterweight in the world. If I go somewhere else and win a title, people aren’t gonna give me the credit.
“I mean, I don’t get the credit as it is anyways. Everybody wants to downplay everything I’ve done and act like I’ve never done anything because they’re just all so in their feelings and these are just liberal cucks, but at the end of the day, I’m here to be the greatest in the world and I’m gonna fight the greatest in the world.
“I’m not scared like ‘Judas’ Masvidal. I’m not running from the hard fights, I’m looking for the hardest fights. I’m looking for the challenges of the people that think they can beat me. So, I wanna be in the UFC forever. I would love to retire in the UFC, be in the Hall of Fame, do the whole spiel.”
Superfights And Grudge Matches
Covington then shared his thoughts about the decline in the importance of championship belts. Title fights used to be the most reliable source of income for the UFC. However, Colby points out that grudge matches and superfights are now the most sought after matchups for the fans.
“Let’s be honest guys, belts don’t mean anything anymore. The belts mean nothing. I mean, the biggest fights that can be made, they’re not with belts anymore. Those aren’t the big fights. Look at me and Jorge Masvidal. There’s no belt. There’s just a real beef, and that’s the biggest fight that can be made. And for Jon [Jones], bigger fights are at heavyweight or maybe with Adesanya. That could be his biggest fight. So, there’s really no belts that are needed anymore these days for negotiating and for showing your worth and your drawing power. So, the belt has no relevance to negotiations.”
Just the mention of Jon Jones captured Covington’s attention. The light heavyweight champion hit out at Dana on social media recently, following failed negotiations for a heavyweight superfight with Francis Ngannou.
Jon Jones’ P.R. Stunt
Jones has since began posting footage of himself helping to suppress rioters and looters, amid the George Floyd protests. As well meaning as this appears, Covington believes that it is just a P.R. stunt to boost his image in the wake of his recent outbursts.
“The funniest thing about the Jon Jones thing is that he just conveniently has a camera set up right as he’s stealing some spray cans from two protesters and rioters in the street. I think it’s just hilarious how fake he is and now he’s trying to act like he’s a babyface hero? Dude you’re a scumbag, you were just shooting guns and getting a DUI last week. Where were you at when the cops were there? You were just wrapping a Bentley around a poll with two hookers in the back while your wife and kids were at home. All the steroids you’ve done, all the cocaine you’ve done, man, you’re not a good guy, you’re not a hero Jon, stop trying to act like you’re a hero.”
Mystery Cameraman
Covington believes that ‘Bones’ will use recent good deeds to help him in his future negotiations with the UFC. During his argument with Dana, the president said that Jones had ‘ruined his own career’. A comment which was aimed towards the various controversies that have led to Jones’ unstable reign as light heavyweight champion.
“It’s pathetic, the guy’s out there begging for money and all of a sudden mysteriously there’s a camera man set up and he’s the good guy again. He wants to be a babyface hero and look good for negotiations with Dana, his boss. The guy’s a complete joke, I mean he doesn’t deserve to be paid. Look at his history, look at his track record, the guy can’t get out of his own way. It’s one thing to make a mistake but it’s another thing to continually make the same mistake, so the guy’s a dirtbag he shouldn’t be paid anything. The guy shouldn’t even be fighting, he should be suspended for his whole career. When you fail two or three steroid tests, I don’t even know why he’s still in the UFC.”
