UFC – Ali Abdelaziz: Gaethje Should Get Title Shot Ahead Of McGregor

Since the UFC announced Conor McGregor vs ‘Cowboy’ Cerrone at UFC 246, and Khabib Nurmagomedov vs Tony Ferguson at UFC 249 for the lightweight title, UFC president Dana White has stated that should McGregor and Khabib both with, they will rematch.

And while this may please some fans, Khabib and Justin Gaethje, along with their manager Ali Abdelaziz, have all expressed their disapproval at Dana’s comments.

Abdelaziz has again stated that he doesn’t believe McGregor is deserving of another shot at Khabib. Speaking to TMZ Sports, Ali said that Dana was merely doing his job as a promoter, by claiming that the former UFC two division champion will get another title shot with a win over ‘Cowboy’ in two weeks time.

“Listen, Dana is the greatest promoter in history. I respect the man very, very much. And he have to make people care about Conor, and by mentioning Khabib’s name, he is making Conor more relevant.”

Obviously if McGregor does lose to ‘Cowboy’, the issue goes away. And Abdelaziz believes this could very well happen.

“He may lose to ‘Cowboy’ as I far as I understand. I think he might lose.”

When asked if the fans may deserve to see a rematch between Khabib and McGregor, Abdelaziz disagreed, stating that the first fight wasn’t even close. Adding that Gaethje is much more deserving of fighting for the title.

“When you get beat up for four rounds and get finished. What about a guy like Justin Gaethje? He’s been winning, knocking people out.”

Should McGregor beat ‘Cowboy’, and with Khabib vs Tony not until April, there will be calls for McGregor to fight Gaethje for the next title shot. And although Conor suggested in an interview this week that he could face Justin next, Abdelaziz believes the Irishman wants no part of his man.

“Conor does not want to have to do anything with Gaethje. We understand. Gaethje take a lot of people to deep water. We understand Conor is a quitter. He quit. He quit when he’s in deep water. The UFC made the right choice, his team made the right choice not to fight Gaethje because he would have beat his ass.”

Abdelaziz also hinted that another one of his fighters, Henry Cejudo, could defend his UFC bantamweight title against Jose Aldo in Brazil next.

“A lot of people are interested in him fighting Jose Aldo in Brazil. We working on some details. I think Dana mentioned it. It doesn’t matter, he’s the champ. He needs to fight whoever the UFC put in front of him.
