‘Korean Zombie’ Focused On Volkanovski, Despite Imminent Eye Surgery

‘The Korean Zombie’ (Chan Sung Jung) impressed the MMA world again with his first round stoppage over Frankie Edgar in the UFC’s last card of 2019. But what made the win in the UFC Busan main event even more impressive was the fact that he was experiencing double vision at the time.

During the UFC Busan post fight press conference, ‘The Zombie’ revealed that he had been having issues with his eye sight going into the fight.

Speaking to MMA Junkie, ‘The Zombie’ said that although he had been given contrasting medical opinions on his eye injury, he had decided to have surgery to correct the issue.

“Recently, it has been more important for me to figure out my double vision issue. It took a long time to get medical exams done and there was a difference with diagnoses between doctors in Korea and Phoenix.

“Finally, I decided to get the surgery done in Phoenix soon. I am sure I will be able to get back to the cage around July or August because the surgeon says it is not a big surgery.”

When he does return, ‘The Zombie’ has his sights set on Alex Volkanovski (excuse the pun!). But with the new champion expected to give an immediate rematch to Max Holloway in the UFC 251 main event in Perth, and Brian Ortega and Zabit Magomedsharipov expected to meet at UFC 249, the only top five featherweight left without a fight is Yair Rodriguez. The man he lost to in the fight of the year in 2018, via a last second crazy no-look elbow.

But while ‘The Zombie’ expects to rematch Rodriguez at some point, he doesn’t feel it necessary to fight him next.

“Let me make sure I am OK to fight him again. The fight was great, and that was one of the fights I never want to remove in my career. But I don’t think Yair wants to fight me because he already won the fight against me. I don’t see the reason I need to fight him, either, at this point in time. I expect I will meet him again in the future, and I promise it will be a great fight again.

“Right now, my focus goes on Volkanovski. If it would not work for me to fight the champion, I would be interested in fighting Ortega but I want to make sure. At this moment, I want to fight Volkanovski.”

Last month, ‘The Zombie’ named Volkanovski, Magomedsharipov and Ortega as the three men he was interested in facing next.

Who would you like to see ‘The Korean Zombie’ fight when he returns to the Octagon?
