Floyd Mayweather Open To Conor McGregor Rematch For Right Price

Floyd Mayweather has made coming out of retirement a business. The former five division world champion first retired in 2007, after beating Ricky Hatton. Since then, he has fought eleven times, with several more retirements along the way. ‘Money’ officially retired once again after his last fight, against Conor McGregor in 2017.

‘The Money Fight’ was a major commercial success, selling over four million pay-per-views. Both men have teased of a rematch ever since. Mayweather has sent out multiple threats to the Irishman, while McGregor has guaranteed a victory ‘when’ the match materialises.

Teasing The Comeback

Speaking to Forbes, Mayweather hinted at another comeback.

“We’re working on some things right now for Tokyo, whether 2020 or 2021.”

Although he retired after the fight against McGregor, Mayweather competed in an exhibition match with the kickboxing star Tenshin Nasukawa in Japan at RIZIN 14, on New Years Eve in 2018. It seems as though the 43-year-old is willing to challenge fighters from any combat sport, but he prefers to do it on his own turf.

“No [I won’t compete in MMA]. I think just like how winning teams receive home-field advantage in the playoffs… you don’t fix what isn’t broken, and my record isn’t broken,” Mayweather explained.

Rematch With Conor McGregor

Mayweather’s 50-0 record is indeed impressive, as is his bank account. The boxing superstar allegedly produced over 1.6 billion dollars in pay-per-view numbers over the course of his career, around half of which he cashed in. ‘The Money Fight’ with McGregor earned him a reported $300, and $100 million for the Irishman, and broke several records in the fight business.

When asked about the rematch, Mayweather was quite ambivalent as always.

“For now, I’m happily retired. You never know, but it would have to be worth it,” he said, “Just like gambling right? Juice worth the squeeze no matter who the opponent is.”

Before the coronavirus pandemic put the world on hold, Mayweather and Dana White had been in discussions to work together in 2020, with both confirming that it would involve Floyd fighting again. More recently, ‘Money’ has been in talks with RIZIN FF about another exhibition boxing match at the end of the year.

Do you think we’ll see a rematch between Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor?
