Dana White Is ‘Definitely Interested’ In Claressa Shields Coming To MMA

Tyson Fury has recently made headlines for claiming that he plans on moving to MMA in the next year. And even teased about doing an MMA double header with Conor McGregor. Speaking to TMZ Sports yesterday, Dana White said he couldn’t understand why Fury would want to come to the UFC to get smashed. However, the UFC boss doesn’t feel the same way about Claressa Shields.

Shields, the WBA, WBC, IBF, WBO and The Ring female middleweight world champion, recently said that she plans on moving to MMA, to get the respect she deserves. And Dana said he full understands why she would want to make the transition.

“The Claressa Shields thing, she’s obviously the best in the world right now. And the money isn’t there in boxing, like it is for Tyson Fury and these top four heavyweights (Fury, Deontay Wilder, Anthony Joshua and Andy Ruiz).

“I understand Claressa Shields wanting to come over here and do this to make some money. Because my girls make more money than any other combat sport female in the world. Shit, my girls make more money than most female athletes in any sport anywhere else in the world.”

Shields has said previously that she plans on making her MMA debut in September of 2020, and Dana said he is definitely interested in bringing her to the UFC.

“I’m definitely interested in that. Because if you look, right now, if you look at her, she’s the best in boxing and I have the GOAT. I have the greatest female fighter of all time right now, in Amanda Nunes. So yes, that I understand.”

A Shields vs Nunes matchup would be huge. Although ‘T-Rex’ has stated that the lowest she could go in weight would be 155lbs. The heaviest Nunes has fought at is 145lbs, when she defeated Cris Cyborg at UFC 232, to win the UFC featherweight title.

The two time gold medalist Olympic boxer has in the past shown an interest in competing against Nunes in boxing and MMA. And with Zuffa Boxing officially launching imminently, perhaps we could see Shields and Nunes face off in boxing and MMA.
