Coach Kavanagh Talks McGregor Matchups With Gaethje And Usman

Conor McGregor’s coach John Kavanagh has revealed that the Irishman was close to fighting Justin Gaethje. ‘The Notorious’ recently announced his retirement, due to the ‘lack of options’. But despite this, there has still been speculation as to who he could fight next.

Speaking to MMA World (transcribed by BJPenn.com), Kavanagh discussed a potential clash between McGregor and current interim UFC lightweight champion, Gaethje. Although ‘The Highlight’ has recently claimed that he would knock out the Conor, the SBG Ireland head coach believes that it would be a great matchup for Conor.

“I think the Gaethje fight is probably the best fight I could imagine because he has the style that really matches well with Conor,” Kavanagh said. “Gaethje likes to march forward. He sits down on his shots, he throws heavy shots. He doesn’t seem to care about being hit, he likes coming forward. Conor’s always done very well as a counter fighter. Although he does walk forward, he responds to people’s attacks very well.”

Kavanagh also revealed that the fight was close to being made previously but unfortunately it never got officially booked.

“It was close to being done,” Kavanagh said. “It’s kinda sad now that it didn’t happen. We have obviously the coronavirus and how everything went with the world. I think we could’ve been getting ready for that fight any week now if things hadn’t have happened the way they did. But here we are, so all we can do is speculate.”

If McGregor does make a decision to return, Kavanagh believes that a highly motivated Conor is capable of defeating the welterweight champion Kamaru Usman or any other fighter in the division (transcribed by Middle Easy).

“That would be an interesting one,” Kavanagh said. “There is a fair size difference in there. Look, I’ll be honest…anybody up to or around about his weight class, if there is a very motivated Conor, I think he beats any of them.

“He easily has knockout power up to that weight class and if he was to put in a serious training camp, I think he wins.”

If Conor McGregor comes out of retirement, who would you like to see him go up against?
