Alex Volkanovski Wants To Prove Himself At Lightweight Against Khabib

Alex Volkanovski wouldn’t miss an opportunity to face “one of the GOATs” Khabib Nurmagomedov inside the Octagon.

Former two-division UFC champion Henry Cejudo recently revealed that he would come out of retirement if given a chance to face Volkanovski for the featherweight title. And although the Australian is open to the idea of facing ‘Triple C’, he admits that fighting Khabib is definitely on his wish list.

Speaking to theScore (transcribed by BJPenn.com), Volkanovski said that if he keeps winning, he could face Khabib as early as the start of next year.

“I don’t like people chasing other divisions, but [fighting Khabib] is definitely an option. Right now, [I’ve] got a belt to defend and then there’s probably going be number one contender [next]. But I mean early next year, if something comes to me, like that fight, I’ll have to take it.”

‘The Eagle’ is well known for his world-class wrestling skills. To this point in his career, the unbeaten lightweight champion has had very little in response to his ground game inside the Octagon.

However, Volkanovski believes that Khabib wouldn’t be able to dominate him on the ground. According to the featherweight champion, he has what it takes to defeat the Russian and even make his mark in the lightweight division.

“Khabib is one of the GOATs as well. Nothing but respect for the dude,” Volkanovski said. “But I’m very, very hard to hold down. I’ve obviously got the brains. I’ve got the cardio. I’m a freak when it comes to holding on the ground; it’s just almost impossible holding me on the ground. Nothing but respect to all the fighters that are in the UFC, but every single one of us wants to prove something. And you know, eventually, I want to prove myself in that lightweight division too.”

Volkanovski is set to defend his featherweight title at UFC 251 on Fight Island against Max Holloway, the man he defeated at UFC 245 to win the belt.

Do you think Alex Volkanovski has what it takes to beat Khabib Nurmagomedov?
